Black cat day

Black cat day

Since 2011, the seventeenth of August has been declared a day of kindness, appreciation and understanding for black cats. There is no doubt that these ebony beasts are as mysterious as they are beautiful.

The goal of a day dedicated to black cats is to dispel the myths and superstitions surrounding them. Black cats have a fascinating history, from being revered by ancient Egyptians to being associated with witchcraft in medieval Europe. Despite their dark appearance, black cats are actually very friendly and loving companions. They have unfortunately gained a bad reputation over the centuries, but they deserve to be adopted and treated well like any other cat. Black cats have also been associated with Halloween and occultism, but this is likely due to ancient Celtic traditions rather than any actual connection to evil. In maritime folklore, black cats were considered good luck on ships because they helped control the rodent population. Sailors even believed that a cat's behavior could predict the weather.
