International Cat Day

International Cat Day

International Cat Day has been celebrated annually since 2002 on August 8. It was announced by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) along with several other organizations fighting for animal rights. The aim of this day is to highlight the importance of cats in people's lives.

The idea of International Cat Day was born in 2002 in South America with the aim of raising awareness about the growing number of stray cats in the continent. Cats are one of the most popular pets worldwide, and there are millions of rescued or abandoned kittens waiting to be adopted. Adopting a cat not only helps the cat, but also brings positive changes to the owner's life. Cats are independent animals that can thrive in both the wild and domestic environments. Unlike dogs, cats are not as dependent on humans and show their emotions more subtly. Building trust and friendship with a cat, especially an adopted one, takes time but can be a unique and fulfilling experience. It has been proven that owning a cat has benefits for both the cat and the owner, including emotional, psychological, and physical well-being. Taking care of an adopted cat extends their lifespan compared to stray cats. Responsible adoption involves taking the cat to a veterinarian for a health check-up, as stray cats may have parasites and diseases that need to be treated. During the first few weeks after adoption, it is important to help the cat adjust to its new home and establish basic rules. Providing a safe and peaceful environment for the cat is essential.
