World Habitat Day

World Habitat Day

In 1985, the United Nations declared the first Monday in October each year as World Habitat Day. The goal is to think about the state of our communities and the basic right of everyone to adequate shelter. It is also meant to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human environment.

Cities and local governments play a crucial role in responding to crises and planning for an inclusive, resilient, and green future. To prepare urban areas for future disasters, local action and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals are more important than ever. This year's World Habitat Day focuses on the theme of Resilient Urban Economy: Cities as Drivers of Growth and Recovery, exploring how cities can improve their economies for the benefit of their residents. The Habitat Scroll of Honor Award, established by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme in 1989, recognizes initiatives that have made significant contributions in areas such as providing shelter, addressing homelessness, leading post-conflict reconstruction, and promoting the development and improvement of human settlements and urban quality of life.
