June 5th
International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing
It is estimated that one in five fish caught comes from illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. When such fish reaches our plates, we become unwitting accomplices to unsustainable and often criminal practices that harm our future well-being and the sustainability of our planet. But we can help change that.
The International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing, celebrated on June 5th, highlights the global issue of IUU fishing, causing the loss of 11-26 million tons of fish annually, valued at USD 10-23 billion. This day calls for international cooperation to regulate fishing and end destructive practices. FAO supports this fight through the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and the binding Port State Measures Agreement
