World Legume Day

February 10 is World Pulses Day since 2019. It was announced in 2016 as the International Year of Pulses. The World Legumes Day aims to raise the awareness of the world public about the advantages and benefits of legumes - whether in consumption or production. The consumption of legumes is also supposed to help with the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals - above all, the end of hunger in the world.

The World Pulses Day has a special significance for the goals of sustainable development 1 2 3 5 8 12 13 and 15. Pulses are rich in beneficial substances and overall very beneficial for our health. They contain a lot of proteins, but very little fat. Pulses are naturally gluten-free and contain a lot of iron, zinc, minerals, and B-group vitamins. The cultivation of pulses also has several advantages. The production of 1 kg of pulses consumes 1250 liters of water, which is ten times less than the amount of water needed for 1 kg of beef. Pulses can also be grown in less fertile soil and can withstand semi-arid areas. They increase biodiversity and provide shelter for other species of animals and insects. Pulses have a long shelf life and are a staple in many traditional dishes from around the world, including hummus, falafel, chili con carne, and English breakfast. Even the original Czech cuisine relies on pulses, such as lentil soup or pea porridge.
