June 3rd
World Bicycle Day
World Bicycle Day was declared by the United Nations General Assembly on June 3. The UN Declaration called on all member states to celebrate and support cycling and to integrate it into all levels of state policy. The bicycle, used for centuries, has been recognized by the organization for its uniqueness, longevity and versatility, while being a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally friendly means of transport.
The European Day of Cycling has been celebrated since 1988. According to a survey by Perfect Crowd agency, Czechs are a nation of cyclists, with 34% of them riding a bike daily or almost daily, 50% preferring mountain bikes, 25% using trekking bikes, and 16% choosing road bikes. The average age of a bike in the Czech Republic is 8 years, with 52% of cyclists owning a bike less than 5 years old. Czechs own bikes with an average value of 16,000 CZK, with 51% buying a bike for less than 10,000 CZK. Cycling is generally seen as an environmentally friendly activity, but this seminar work aims to explore whether this perception is accurate.
