May 4th
International Birdsong Days
Welcoming birdsong follows a tradition established in 1983 in Birmingham under the name Dawn Chorus Day, where local ornithologists came up with the idea to welcome spring on the first Sunday in May. The event was later taken over by BirdLife International's partners throughout Europe, and Vítání thus became the largest ornithological event ever.
The Czech Society for Ornithology has been organizing the Birdsong Welcome since 1992. There are walks in over a hundred locations across the country, accompanied by demonstrations of bird ringing, birdhouse exhibitions, and other bird protection activities. The main date for the event is the first weekend in May, but some activities take place earlier or later. Some of the upcoming events include excursions to bird parks, bird watching trips, and a night nature walk. There will also be a special event on May 10th about the most common bird songs in spring, led by expert Ondřej Belfín. If you want to enjoy the birdsong, you can visit forests, meadows, bird reserves, or ornithological observatories. Tips on where to go can also be found in the Kudy z nudy magazine.
