International Day of Plant Health

International Day of Plant Health

The United Nations has designated May 12 as the International Day for Plant Health (IDPH) to raise global awareness of how protecting plant health can help end hunger, reduce poverty, protect biodiversity and the environment, and promote economic development. The day is a key legacy of the International Year of Plant Health 2020.

Plants are crucial for our health and the health of our planet. However, they are threatened by pests and diseases, resulting in the loss of up to 40% of food crops each year. This has a significant impact on food security and the livelihoods of vulnerable rural communities. Climate change and human activities are also altering ecosystems and damaging biodiversity, creating new opportunities for pests to thrive. It is essential to protect plants for the sake of both people and the planet. The book "Healthy Plants, Healthy Planet" is designed to educate children and young people about plant protection. Although it is aimed at ages 8-12, it can be useful for older children and educators as well. It serves as a simple guide to plant protection, created in honor of the International Year of Plant Health 2020.
