International Animal Day
On October 4, every animal lover can celebrate their big day with their pet - World Animal Day. This tradition began as early as 1931 in Florence, Italy (coincidentally, the zoo in Prague was also opened in this year). The Czech Republic officially participated in these celebrations for the first time in 1994. The purpose of the announcement is clear, to remind people that animals are living creatures and an important part of our planet. The behavior of people towards animals should therefore be considerate and everyone should avoid any manifestations of cruelty and restriction of animal freedom.
Why October 4th? This date was chosen in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. Francis, the founder of the Franciscan order, preached a humble life in poverty and cared for abandoned and sick animals. According to historical sources, he spoke to animals and considered them not as lower beings than humans, but as his brothers and sisters, children of the same father. Such an approach to animals was not typical in Christianity. Francis of Assisi also anticipated the demands of ecological character, including the extension of human ethics to all living beings, which is why he became the patron of ecology. Francis died on October 4th, 1226, and for this reason, this date was later suitable for the declaration of World Animal Day.
World Animal Day has a well-established tradition in the Czech Republic and is becoming more and more known to a growing number of people. Its celebrations take place in various cities throughout the country. Zoos play a significant role in spreading this tradition, where lively celebrations with rich accompanying programs are held every year for both human visitors and animals. Animals from shelters also celebrate their day. The Animal Protection Foundation organizes annual celebrations of World Animal Day, combined with a charitable collection of breeding supplies for abandoned dogs and cats, and the acquired breeding aids are handed over to shelters.
