International Day of Forests

International Day of Forests

The International Day of Forests was declared by the UN General Assembly in December 2012 and celebrated for the first time on March 21, 2013. Its main purpose is to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forest ecosystems for sustainable development.

Forests are crucial for sustainable development, covering one-third of the Earth's surface and providing a high level of biodiversity and ecosystem services. They also provide essential goods and services to humans, such as food, water, shelter, and recreation, and play a significant role in carbon storage. However, global deforestation continues at an alarming pace. The theme for the International Day of Forests in 2023 is "Forests and Health," highlighting the many benefits forests provide for our well-being. To celebrate this day, people are encouraged to participate in events such as tree planting, symposiums, art exhibitions, and photo contests, and to share their experiences on social media using the hashtag #IntlForestDay. It is important to protect these valuable natural resources, as healthy forests lead to healthy people.
