World Meteorological Day

World Meteorological Day

World Meteorological Day has been celebrated every year since 1950, when the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) was founded. It was on March 23 of this year that the agreement was signed, thereby officially establishing the WMO, and a year later it was incorporated into the UN structure.

The theme of World Meteorological Day 2023 is "The Future of Weather, Climate, and Water Across Generations." The day highlights the interconnectedness of the planet and the need for international cooperation in understanding and predicting weather, climate, and water systems. The anniversary also serves as a reminder of the changing climate and the urgent need to reduce emissions and ensure the survival and prosperity of future generations. The good news is that advancements in science and technology have significantly improved the accuracy of weather forecasts and early warnings. There has also been progress in monitoring and simulating global climate to support decision-making. In the Czech Republic, there are six meteorological stations recognized by the World Meteorological Organization for their long and high-quality meteorological measurements and observations. These stations play a crucial role in understanding climate change and are part of the nation's cultural heritage. The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute currently has operational information from 590 stations for precipitation and 310 stations for air temperature.
