March 30
Zero Waste Day
International Zero Waste Day, proclaimed by the United Nations since 2023, aims to promote models of sustainable consumption and production and to raise awareness of how zero waste initiatives contribute to the promotion of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The United Nations General Assembly formally recognized the importance of zero waste initiatives and declared March 30th as International Zero Waste Day, to be celebrated annually starting in 2023. Zero waste initiatives can promote proper waste management, minimize waste generation, reduce pollution, mitigate the climate crisis, preserve biodiversity, enhance food security, and improve human health. The United Nations Environment Programme and UN-Habitat will support the observance of this day, and all UN member states and relevant stakeholders have been urged to implement zero waste initiatives at the local, regional, and national levels.
