Was ist Ihre Meinung dazu? Werden Sie heute einen fleischlosen Tag ausprobieren?

Vegetarianism and, to a lesser extent, veganism have become increasingly popular in recent years. It is now widely understood what it means to be a vegetarian, and fewer people view it negatively. This is good news, even for those who still enjoy eating meat occasionally. The truth is that our society consumes meat excessively, which is not good for our health or the environment. It is now easier than ever to be a vegetarian, as the options and availability of vegetarian food have greatly improved. The health benefits of vegetarianism, such as weight loss, improved digestion, and reduced risk of heart disease, are undeniable. Whether you choose to completely give up meat or simply reduce your consumption, you will feel the positive effects on your health. Vegetarianism also provides positive answers to questions about fiber, antioxidants, and natural vitamins, making it a worthwhile consideration for those seeking a healthy lifestyle. Even if you are a meat lover, it is worth trying a meat-free day as an experiment. This topic remains controversial, so what is your opinion? Will you try a day without meat?

This world has experienced its share of bloody wars that have ended countless lives and filled many others with sorrow. Regardless of which country you go to, there are stories of how someone's greed or desire for power led to the killing of innocent people, the destruction of beautiful cities, and the plundering of natural resources. Even wars fought for a good cause, such as the American Civil War, which resulted in the abolition of slavery, were responsible for a large number of deaths.

Fortunately, there are people in this world who have brought about changes they deemed necessary without violence or brute force, and it is these individuals that International Nonviolence Day celebrates.

International Nonviolence Day is celebrated on October 2nd in honor of Mahatma Gandhi's birthday, one of the most influential political activists of all time. Gandhi used nonviolent civil disobedience to eventually overthrow the British, who ruled India at the time. Despite being imprisoned multiple times, nothing ever compelled him to abandon his peaceful approach, which eventually led to India gaining the independence it had long yearned for.

However, his country's independence was not the only matter Gandhi considered important. He also actively sought to build good relationships between people of different religions and ethnicities, expand women's rights, and reduce poverty. Although he was assassinated by a Hindu nationalist in 1948, he has never been forgotten, and the majority of Indians refer to him as the father of the nation.

One of the best ways to honor the life and achievements of Mahatma Gandhi and other world leaders who won their battles without violence is to choose one of these individuals and read their biography, finding out what motivated them and what helped them maintain their strength even when they witnessed terrible things happening around them.

Such individuals include civil rights activists Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, Beatles star John Lennon, humanitarian activist Harry Belafonte, and, of course, anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela. The life stories of each of these people are fascinating and inspiring. If you have children, this day could be an ideal time to teach them the virtues of courage, compassion, and perseverance.

Children can be cruel, so it is important to instill in them strong feelings of good and evil in the hope that they will become good, strong adults and worthy successors to the aforementioned individuals. After all, children are the future and the people who will shape history. Whether you decide to celebrate International Nonviolence Day, make sure you do what you can to honor the courage and goodness of people like Mahatma Gandhi and continue their legacy.

Svet zažil mnoho krvavých vojen, ktoré si vyžiadali mnoho životov a priniesli smútok. Napriek tomu existujú ľudia, ktorí dosiahli zmeny bez násilia a hrubej sily.

The World Day of Farm Animals is a day of mourning and remembrance for all animals that are imprisoned, tortured, and killed due to societal demand for products derived from their bodies. Modern ethological research shows that these animals are intelligent beings with rich emotional lives, and they are not fundamentally different from the animals we share our homes with as family members. They experience joy, sadness, pleasure, and pain, just like our beloved dogs and cats. Let us honor the memory of these innocent victims of human desires at a memorial gathering. The event will take place in many locations around the world and will be conducted in a solemn manner. Participants are requested to dress in formal mourning attire. The event can take various forms, with some cities organizing memorial gatherings in one location and others holding funeral processions with a symbolic coffin. Typical features of the event include solemn speeches that remind us of the billions of forgotten victims each year. More information about the World Day of Farm Animals can be found at httpssdhzcz.

Navíc mají dlouhou životnost a neobsahují toxické chemikálie. Přechod na LED osvětlení je tedy ekologickým a finančně výhodným řešením. Kromě výměny žárovek lze oslavit Change A Light Day i jinými energeticky úspornými kroky, jako je zlepšení izolace domu nebo instalace chytrého měřiče.

Save on your electricity bill and the environment by switching to LED lights, which consume less energy and are therefore cheaper and more environmentally friendly. Change A Light Day was created to encourage people to make a small change in their homes that would lead to lower energy consumption. LED lighting is ideal for any situation, whether it's a household or a business, as it is highly energy efficient. LED bulbs consume up to 90% less energy compared to traditional bulbs. Additionally, LED lights have a long lifespan, lasting up to 100,000 hours, and they emit minimal UV radiation and infrared light. LED lighting is also eco-friendly, as it reduces carbon emissions and does not contain toxic chemicals. Celebrate Change A Light Day by purchasing LED bulbs for your home and encouraging others to make the switch.

LED žiarovky tiež majú dlhú životnosť a neprodukujú takmer žiadne UV žiarenie ani infračervené svetlo.

Why October 4th? This date was chosen in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. Francis, the founder of the Franciscan order, preached a humble life in poverty and cared for abandoned and sick animals. According to historical sources, he spoke to animals and considered them not as lower beings than humans, but as his brothers and sisters, children of the same father. Such an approach to animals was not typical in Christianity. Francis of Assisi also anticipated the demands of ecological character, including the extension of human ethics to all living beings, which is why he became the patron of ecology. Francis died on October 4th, 1226, and for this reason, this date was later suitable for the declaration of World Animal Day.

World Animal Day has a well-established tradition in the Czech Republic and is becoming more and more known to a growing number of people. Its celebrations take place in various cities throughout the country. Zoos play a significant role in spreading this tradition, where lively celebrations with rich accompanying programs are held every year for both human visitors and animals. Animals from shelters also celebrate their day. The Animal Protection Foundation organizes annual celebrations of World Animal Day, combined with a charitable collection of breeding supplies for abandoned dogs and cats, and the acquired breeding aids are handed over to shelters.

It is not difficult to understand why World Architecture Day is important. Architects play a huge role in society, combining science and art with politics, economics, sociology, psychology, ecology, and more. We should appreciate their work and celebrate all the amazing things they have done and encourage them for what they will do in the future.

The challenges facing architects today are not small. Construction accounts for 37% of carbon dioxide emissions, consumes 50% of natural resources, and generates 40% of solid waste. The transformation towards sustainability largely depends on this industry. The concept of sustainable construction is widely known, but there is still a lack of knowledge about what it entails. Only one in five stakeholders in the construction industry systematically calculates the carbon footprint of a project. Nevertheless, every construction project starts with a design, so the future of sustainable construction lies in the hands of architects, who are celebrating their holiday today.

The Energy Efficiency Day is a tradition that started in 2016. Its message can be summarized in three key words: save money, reduce pollution, and create job opportunities. As climate change continues, customers demand that companies act sustainably. Companies are becoming more aware of their responsibility, and the relevance of these demands is increasing. The Energy Efficiency Day focuses not only on motivating companies and educating about the issue but also on sharing know-how.

The partnership between the Energy Efficiency Day and Schneider Electric, a company whose business is based on the same principles, is one of the best partnerships that could have been formed. Schneider Electric's solutions, services, and products are used in various human activities, from industrial production to healthcare operations, transportation and energy infrastructure projects, and modern homes.

Efficient and eco-friendly operation of buildings and factories is essential. Schneider Electric has developed the EcoStruxure platform, which connects the entire enterprise, from floor to roof. The platform maximizes efficiency, optimizes energy consumption, and increases productivity. Real-time monitoring allows for proactive management, leading to significant cost savings.

The Svatopetrská project in Brno is a perfect example of Schneider Electric's modern technology transforming an old building into a combination of great living spaces and functional business areas. The KNX system and EcoStruxure control lighting, air conditioning, heating, water consumption, and energy distribution from a photovoltaic power plant. The project achieved a 25% reduction in electricity consumption and a 50% reduction in water consumption.

Reducing pollution and emissions is an essential part of taking care of our planet. Schneider Electric offers solutions that help achieve maximum efficiency, such as the Altivar Process system used in the water treatment plant in Písek. The company also developed technology for high-voltage switchgear that replaces the harmful SF6 gas with clean air, saving 24 kg of SF6 per average distribution substation.

Schneider Electric is committed to sharing its know-how and helping reduce pollution and achieve savings. The company has published several White Papers that provide valuable insights and supports the transition to a more sustainable future.

Schneider Electric not only sets high standards for its own facilities but also focuses on social impact. The company strives to improve opportunities for talents regardless of gender, race, origin, or age. Schneider Electric has been consistently recognized for its efforts, ranking high in the Corporate Knights' prestigious list.

In the Czech Republic, Schneider Electric is increasingly chosen as an employer by women, and the gender ratio is almost balanced. Globally, women make up 44% of the company's executive committee, surpassing the average for technical companies. Equileap, a provider of gender equality data and information, has ranked Schneider Electric among the top 20 companies in terms of gender balance.

The Energy Efficiency Day is not the only event promoting energy efficiency. The EKOkalendář calendar by the Ukliďme Česko association features over 240 environmental days and holidays, providing detailed information about them. The calendar also includes 365 eco-tips for each day. The printed EKOkalendář for 2024 can be purchased on the Ukliďme Česko FanShop.

Geodiversity is a natural part of the planet that includes non-living elements such as minerals, rocks, fossils, soils, sediments, and landforms, as well as hydrological features like rivers and lakes. It provides materials for building cities and supports agricultural systems by providing soil and water. Geodiversity also serves as a source of energy production, including materials used for wind turbines and solar panels. It inspires artists and fascinates tourists with its diverse landscapes. However, most people are not aware of the extent to which we depend on geodiversity. Therefore, it is crucial to promote a better understanding of Earth's dynamic processes to ensure that citizens make informed political decisions for a more sustainable society, which is a key element in achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. International Geodiversity Day provides an opportunity to showcase how education in geological sciences can provide sustainable solutions to urgent problems such as responsible resource extraction, disaster risk reduction, climate change mitigation, and loss of biodiversity. It also raises awareness of the critical connections between geodiversity and all forms of life. UNESCO, as the only UN body mandated to support research and capacity building in geology and geophysics, will use International Geodiversity Day to promote the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and create new UNESCO Global Geoparks, particularly in Africa, the Arab region, and Latin America.

Prostredníctvom svojej rozmanitej krajiny farieb a foriem inšpiruje geodiverzita umelcov a fascinuje turistov.

Bavlna je hlavním zdrojem obživy a příjmů mnoha venkovských drobných zemědělců a dělníků, včetně žen, a poskytuje zaměstnání a příjem i v nejchudších venkovských oblastech.

The World Cotton Day initiative was born in 2019 when four cotton producers in sub-Saharan Africa - Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, and Mali, known as the Cotton Four - proposed to the World Trade Organization to celebrate World Cotton Day on October 7th. Cotton is one of the most common fabrics in our wardrobes. It is a comfortable, hypoallergenic, breathable, and durable material. However, cotton represents much more than just a commodity. This natural fabric is a product that changes lives around the world, supporting 2.867 billion growers and benefiting over 100 million families in 75 countries on 5 continents. This means that behind every cotton garment, there is a personal story. While cotton is indeed important for developed economies, it serves as a lifeline for the least developed and developing countries. Cotton is the main source of livelihood and income for many rural small-scale farmers and workers, including women, providing employment and income to some of the poorest rural areas in the world. Iniciatíva Svetového dňa bavlny vznikla v roku 2019, keď štyria producenti bavlny v subsaharskej Afrike - Benin, Burkina Faso, Čad a Mali, známi ako Bavlnená štvorka, navrhli Svetovú obchodnú organizáciu oslavu Svetového dňa bavlny 7. októbra.

Octopuses deserve recognition for several reasons. Firstly, they are one of the oldest surviving creatures on Earth, with fossils dating back over 300 million years. They are also highly intelligent, with approximately 500 million neurons in their brains and tentacles, allowing them to learn and solve problems in ways that many other marine animals cannot. Octopuses are visually stunning, with a wide variety of colors, sizes, and shapes. Some can be found in shallow waters, while others live thousands of meters below the surface. They are known for their ability to change colors to blend in with their surroundings as a form of protection. Despite being introverted creatures, there are still plenty of ways to celebrate World Octopus Day. One suggestion is to help stop octopus farming by sending a message to the government of the Canary Islands using the hashtag #StopOctopusFarming. Another idea is to learn more about octopuses by reading about their fascinating lives through sources such as National Geographic, the National Wildlife Federation, and the Smithsonian Institute. Lastly, you can share fun facts about octopuses with friends and colleagues, such as their size, their ability to survive in extreme depths, their unique circulatory system with three hearts, and their intelligence in opening child-proof pill bottles.

The World Migratory Bird Day is an annual campaign that highlights the need for the protection of migratory birds and their habitats. The 2023 campaign focuses on the importance of water for migratory birds and the threats they face due to the increasing human demand for water, pollution, and climate change. Migration is a seasonal journey that birds undertake between their breeding and wintering grounds, with different species migrating different distances. Birds use various navigational cues, such as the Earth's magnetic field, olfactory perception, visual elements, and the position of the sun and stars. The study of bird migration has been facilitated by methods such as ringing and the use of telemetry devices. However, many questions about bird migration remain unanswered.

The International Day for Disaster Reduction aims to raise awareness about how human behavior can influence natural disasters, particularly climate change and global warming. Today, we have the ability to predict disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes with great accuracy, but our ability to prevent them is still limited. On this day, it is important to reflect on how we can mitigate these disasters. For example, a documentary by ČT EDU titled "Natural Disasters Caused by Weather" provides a vivid explanation of tropical cyclones, including their types and occurrence, as well as tornadoes and floods.

It is estimated that in 2019, 53,6 million tons of electronic waste were generated, the highest amount ever, and it is expected to reach an incredible 75 million tons by 2030, which is 9 kg per person worldwide. However, less than 18 percent of this amount was officially documented last year. The rest ended up in landfills, incinerators, or was traded and processed improperly, resulting in a significant loss of valuable and critical raw materials from the supply chain. Electronic waste contains 69 elements from the periodic table, and recycling these materials can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 15 million tons. The app "Kam s ním" provides a list of collection points for various types of waste, helping to minimize environmental impact. The minimum collection rate in EU member states is set at 65 percent of the average weight of appliances placed on the market in the previous three years or alternatively 85 percent of the manufactured appliances. This means collecting approximately 10 million tons, or about 20 kg per person. The International E-Waste Day can significantly contribute to raising awareness and improving the collection rate not only in the Czech Republic and Europe but globally.

Elektronický odpad obsahuje 69 prvkov periodického systému, a vďaka recyklácii môžeme tieto materiály vrátiť späť do výroby, čo len v roku 2019 celosvetovo prispelo k zníženiu produkcie skleníkových plynov o 15 miliónov ton.

The sloth is a solitary creature that lives a slow life and occupies only a small territory of about 0.05 km2. It prefers trees with many lianas and branches illuminated by direct sunlight. Usually, only one animal is found on one tree, and only the female lives with her offspring. Occasionally, males can be seen fighting and attacking each other with their claws.

Interesting facts about sloths:

- Unlike most mammals, sloths have a different number of neck vertebrae. The Bradypus genus has nine, while the Choloepus genus has six neck vertebrae. Additionally, sloths do not have a blind gut or a gallbladder. Up to two-thirds of a sloth's weight can be food in its digestive tract.

- Sloths are capable of surviving injuries that would kill other animals of the same size.

- The English name for the Hoffmann's two-toed sloth is named after the German naturalist Karl Hoffmann (1823-1859). The English word "sloth" means lazy.

In addition to algae, the sloth's fur is home to other species, such as the female moth Cryptoses choloepi, which lives in its fur and lays eggs in its droppings. The yellow-crowned manakin bird has also been observed searching for small invertebrates in the sloth's fur.

Both the brown-throated and Hoffmann's two-toed sloths are considered endangered species. They are primarily threatened by the loss of their natural habitat. Most sloth deaths in Costa Rica are caused by encounters with high-voltage wires or poachers.

Sloths, together with anteaters and armadillos, belong to the Xenarthra group, which appeared in South America 60 million years ago. However, it quickly diversified into a wide range of forms that inhabited all biotopes. Some ground sloths reached the size of an elephant.

History of Arbor Day: Old and sacred groves have been revered and protected since ancient times. The first documented tree planting festival is from the Spanish village of Mondonedo in 1594. The place called Alameda de los Remedios is still planted with linden and ash trees, and a bronze memorial plaque commemorates this event. In 1951, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) adopted a resolution recommending that a World Tree Day be celebrated annually in all member states. In the Czech Republic, the idea of Arbor Day was brought by the Union of Beautification Associations, and it was first celebrated in April 1906. The tradition was interrupted by war and the communist regime, but it was revived in 2000. The history of Arbor Day in the Czech Republic continues to this day, with increasing interest in tree planting and conservation.

5 Steps to Protect Trees that Everyone Can Take
Today is Arbor Day, which falls on October 20th in Central Europe. The protection of our forests is becoming increasingly important as we begin to feel the constant rise in temperatures. Trees provide relief from the heat, not only for us but for the entire Earth. They are our allies in the fight against climate change, as each tree can absorb up to 2 tons of CO2 during its growth. However, due to global warming and drought, record areas of forests have burned in Canada, Russia, and other countries this year. Protecting old forests is more effective in combating climate change than planting new trees. In the Czech Republic, forests cover more than a third of the total area, and they should be given special attention to preserve these valuable ecosystems. Not everyone has the space and time for activism in the field, but our consumer behavior can make a difference. Here are 5 tips on how we can protect trees and contribute to climate change mitigation from the comfort of our homes: 1) Change your consumption habits and buy second-hand products; 2) Avoid buying products with palm oil; 3) Be cautious with paper consumption and choose digital alternatives; 4) Prefer wooden products with the FSC label, which guarantees responsible forest management; 5) Stop procrastination and global warming by using the Forest app, which helps increase productivity and plants real trees. Taking steps to protect our forests is a step towards preserving our planet.

S nápadom obnoviť túto tradíciu v Českej republike prišli bývalý riaditeľ Botanickej záhrady Univerzity Karlovej a známy popularizátor stromov Václav Větvička a drevo-sochár Martin Patřičný.

Our ancestors relied on apples as their main source of fruit and health throughout the winter. Local fruit growers developed varieties ideal for the local climate and had years of experience in their cultivation. However, these old and abandoned orchards or roadside trees are now at risk of extinction as entrepreneurs buy neglected land for cheap and use it as a source of subsidies. We now find imported apples from Spain or Italy on store shelves, and only a few grandmothers make preserves and syrups for their grandchildren. There are also fewer people who know how to care for fruit trees or even recognize their varieties. Most of us are only familiar with modern varieties of imported apples from supermarkets, so we mainly ask for them in nurseries when buying an apple tree for our garden. We rarely consider that seventy-year-old trees growing in abandoned and overgrown orchards outside the village are valuable local varieties. The return of high-stem fruit trees is a very important and indispensable historical element of the local landscape, especially in terms of landscape character. Such an alley lining a road completes and enriches the existing ecosystem. Today, we have few opportunities to walk through an apple alley that offers unexpected beauty of its flowers, leaves, or the scent and taste of sweet colorful fruits in every season. This is also related to the question of why cider presses, fruit dryers, and distilleries have disappeared. Many old varieties are adaptable to the location, reliably bear fruit even in worse conditions, and are hardy against frost and most diseases. Some of them are not inferior in taste to modern apple varieties, such as the old variety Matčino Grávštýnské, red Kalvil, white Kalvil, or the almost forgotten apples Sudetská Reneta, Panenské české, and Řehtáč soudkovitý. These varieties are truly for gourmets. These apple trees are a product of nature and humans who found it worth cultivating them for centuries. We should have respect for them as varieties and for old trees. In the cultural landscape, it has become a tradition to plant trees. If we want to preserve it, you can also celebrate the Day of Original Apple Varieties by planting an apple tree on your land this autumn, but consider carefully which one. Don't forget about suitable living conditions for the tree, a suitable location, enough space, and time. If you have plenty of apple trees in your garden and a rich harvest this year, celebrate this day with your own cider. Source: Ekocentrum Kavyl

Našim predkom poskytovali jablká hlavný zdroj ovocia a zdravia počas celej zimy. Prečo obce nevysádzajú ovocné aleje a stromoradia do krajiny? Návrat ovocných vysokokmeňov je veľmi dôležitým a nenahraditeľným historickým prvkom miestnej krajiny, najmä z hľadiska krajinného rázu. Taká alej lemujúca cestu dotvára a obohacuje súčasný ekosystém.

The snow leopard, also known as the irbis or snow leopard, is a large cat species native to the mountainous regions of Central Asia. It resembles a leopard but is slightly smaller and more robust. The snow leopard's habitat consists mainly of mountain meadows and pastures above the forest line. It primarily preys on mountain ungulates, but also hunts smaller animals such as rodents and birds. The population of wild snow leopards is difficult to monitor due to the inaccessibility of their habitat, but estimates from 2003-2014 range from 3,920 to 7,500 individuals. The species is classified as vulnerable and is protected by legislation, but its main threat is still illegal hunting and poaching for the lucrative trophy trade. Conservation projects for the snow leopard have been established in recent decades, including the Global Snow Leopard & Ecosystem Protection Program, which aims to identify and protect at least 20 healthy populations across the species' range by 2020. In captivity, the snow leopard has been successfully bred, with over 500 individuals in zoos worldwide. The snow leopard is not a common heraldic animal, but it is featured in the coat of arms of the Russian republic of Khakassia and the cities of Almaty and Bishkek. It was also one of the mascots for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

WAS PASSIERT

- Oberflächentemperaturen erreichen neue Rekorde
- Der Anstieg des Meeresspiegels erfolgt besorgniserregend schnell
- Gletscher schwinden weltweit
- Unsere Ozeane sind saurer als je zuvor
- Der Anstieg von Naturkatastrophen hält an

WAS TUN

Every one of us is already feeling the impact of climate change. According to the Norwegian Refugee Council, three times more people are fleeing their homes due to extreme environmental events than due to war or civil conflicts. Climate justice means that countries that bear the main responsibility for global warming must take global responsibility for the consequences and mitigation of climate change. Climate justice also includes intergenerational equality and responsibility for the environment. Instead of leaving future generations with environmental conditions that are at least as good as they are now, a high level of CO2 emissions leads to a situation where future generations have to overcome the unpredictable impacts of climate change.

WHAT IS HAPPENING:

- Surface temperatures are setting new heat records.
- The sea level is rising alarmingly fast.
- Glaciers are retreating worldwide.
- Our oceans are more acidic than ever before.
- Natural disasters are increasing.

WHAT TO DO:

- Change perspectives: Encourage individuals to think about what the world means to them and how they can show their appreciation by protecting and preserving the environment through a willingness to change destructive habits.
- Learn: Climate change is one of the biggest problems we face today, and it is essential that we learn not only the science but also its impact on the world and the changes necessary to preserve Mother Earth.
- Take action: Encourage and involve individuals in the community to contribute to the protection of our planet by choosing reusable products instead of disposable ones, or by recycling paper, plastics, newspapers, glass, and aluminum, or simply by planting trees.
- Celebrate: Climate change is caused by humans, and only humans have the power to change it. Encourage individuals in your surroundings to take a personal inventory of their habits and their impact on the planet and then organize or participate in activities that celebrate our planet.

ClimateActionDay

- Začať konať: Povzbudiť a zapojiť jednotlivcov v komunite, aby prispeli svojou časťou k ochrane

The animal world does not know human qualities such as envy, greed, or injustice, but it is full of emotions such as joy, love for their owner, fear, and pain. Dogs, cats, hamsters, rabbits, hedgehogs, ferrets, parrots, fish, and other domestic and farm animals deserve a healthy and happy life. They need love, proper nutrition, suitable space, and responsible care from their owners. 70 percent of people in our country have a pet, and they spend an average of around a thousand crowns per month on them. Let's not forget about animals in shelters. The exact number of these animals is not known, but the numbers of abandoned or lost animals are in the tens of thousands. There are a total of about 300 shelters in the Czech Republic. Bringing food, toys, or even walking one of the dogs in these shelters would certainly be a nice gift, not only on this holiday.
